Advanced Clinical Supervision: An Inclusive Approach to Improving Outcomes

This course will teach the selection, collection and use of outcome measures in clinical supervision. In session use of simple outcome measures will be demonstrated and practiced. Methods will be taught for using measure to identify clients, who are making progress, not making progress, regressing from previous improvement, or are not engaged. Specific skills will be described, demonstrated and practiced for supervising therapists whose clients are in each of the above situations. Methods for discussing diversity issues in supervision will be discussed.

This course is open only to supervisors of interns, license-eligible, and licensed staff. Licensed staff, who expect to become supervisors soon, may attend with their supervisor’s approval.

After attending this seminar, you should be able to:

  • Describe the research on the effect of using outcome measures in clinical supervision
  • Analyze outcome measures for usefulness in your setting
  • Use simple outcome data in treatment sessions
  • Teach staff to use measures to identify progress or lack of progress
  • Promote generalization of staff skills that are successful with one client to other clients
  • Use progress data to engage and instill hope in clients and staff
  • Provide supervision interventions for clients, who are not making progress
  • Utilize supervision interventions for clients from other cultures, who are not engaged.
