Description

Clinical Supervision in the Frame of Cultural Humility

This workshop presents best practices and evidence support for multicultural clinical supervision in the frame of cultural humility. Through experiential exercises, participants will learn the complexity of the multiple components of supervisor competence and worldviews in clinical supervision. Review of regulations for clinical supervision will be provided. Emphasis is on strategies to enhance supervision, including multicultural identities and worldviews, establishing the supervisory relationship, identifying and addressing strains, prevention of inappropriate and inadequate supervision, which research has identified is occurring at high rates, the supervision contract, goal and task setting, ongoing anchored feedback, trauma and trauma-informed supervision, and the management of countertransference and emotional reactivity and dealing with high-risk situations. These are all essential to enhance supervisor competence in self-awareness and support self-sustainability. There will be discussion of proactive approaches to address ethical practice and legal risk. A combination of lecture, exercises, role-play, and discussion will provide opportunities for interaction.

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe three aspects of cultural humility in clinical supervision practice.
  • List three components of a strong supervisory relationship.
  • Describe two evidence-supported practices that prevent harmful supervision.
  • List three aspects essential to addressing identification and repair of supervisory strains or ruptures.
  • Identify two steps a supervisor may take to address supervisee response to trauma in trauma-informed supervision.
  • Identify three types of feedback in clinical supervision.
