CII Presents Testimony to Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth, Combatting Child Obesity with new “e.n.e.r.g.y.” program, CII Expands Early Childhood Services in High Need Communities, Making Valentines At Spago’s, Celebrating Being Green: OBC Receives Environmental Award, Herbalife & LA Galaxy Join CII to Benefit Youth In South Los Angeles
Representatives from CII provided testimony to the newly created Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth as part of the group’s ongoing national “listening and learning” tour. Agency experts were asked to provide insight and recommendations on foster care policy at the Caucus’ inaugural stop in Los Angeles County, which operates one of the nation's largest child welfare systems. Herbalife and the L.A. Galaxy soccer team have announced an exciting new partnership with CII to provide nutrition and fitness programs for youth in Watts and surrounding communities. The heads of both organizations—Herbalife CEO Michael Johnson and Anschutz Entertainment Group CEO Tim Leiweke—presented a $1-million check to CII Trustee Cara Esposito at a news conference held in March. The donation is a 10-year commitment from the soccer team and its major sponsor, Herbalife. Read more.
CII has significantly expanded Early Care and Education services in Central and South Los Angeles, areas that include some of the County’s most impoverished communities. Our network of full- and part-day early childhood centers, licensed family childcare homes, and home-based Early Head Start and Head Start programs now benefit approximately 1,400 young children each year. Our new Otis Booth Campus has enjoyed recognition from several architectural/design associations and publications since its opening one year ago. Most recently, the facility received a Green Dot Award for 2011 in the “Build” category. Read more.
Valentine’s celebrations were made even sweeter this year for some youth who receive services at CII. Agency Trustee Gelila Assefa Puck and her husband—renowned chef and restaurateur Wolfgang Puck—invited them to spend a few hours in the kitchen of their Beverly Hills restaurant, Spago. Read more.
CII is collaborating with QueensCare Family Clinics to provide a new program that helps families dealing with child obesity—one of the country’s most rapidly growing diseases affecting children. Developed by QueensCare, the program focuses on overweight and obese children ages 2 to 17, but makes a point to involve the whole family. Read more.
