Help in the Nick of Time

Miguel’s story

Four-year-old Miguel had always been a handful at home. But it wasn’t until he entered a Head Start preschool program that his problems became painfully obvious.

One day in school, he might start screaming for no apparent reason and keep up the shrill ear-splitting shrieks for 45 minutes at a time. The next day, he might throw things and lash out at others. He was unable to communicate easily and avoided playing with other children.

The Head Start teachers couldn’t handle him.

Miguel entered CII’s Preschool Day Treatment, a program for three-to-five-year-olds with severe emotional and behavioral problems. CII psychologists conducted a comprehensive assessment and determined that Miguel had a form of autism as well as Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. In the CII program, psychiatrists and counselors worked with Miguel daily. Over time, his violent outbursts decreased. Gradually, he began to talk with staff and play with other children.

Recently, Miguel graduated from CII’s Day Treatment classroom program, but he continues to see CII staff therapists in his home, as does his mother who’s learning how to improve her parenting skills. Thanks to early intervention, Miguel now has a good chance of moving successfully into a regular classroom. CII’s innovative Preschool Day Treatment program changed the course of Miguel’s young life.
