CII Breaks Ground On Otis Booth Campus

Los Angeles — Children’s Institute, Inc. (CII) broke ground today on its extraordinary new facility—The Children’s Institute Otis Booth Campus.

“Children’s Institute has always been a leader in developing innovative new approaches for working with families in crisis, in research and training, and in child-friendly and environmentally responsible architecture,” says CII President and Chief Executive Officer Mary Emmons. “The new campus is an important milestone in CII’s commitment to dramatically increase the number of children it serves. Although the organization currently helps more than 15,000 children every year, that number is only a fraction of those who need help. It will give young people the supportive, safe and nurturing environment they need to recover from trauma and lead healthy lives.”

Scheduled to open in 2010, the Otis Booth Campus will provide a safe haven for more than 5,000 children and families who have been affected by family and community violence, abuse, neglect and other trauma. The campus name is the result of a lead gift from the Otis Booth Foundation. When completed, the new 48,000-square-foot facility will provide space for CII’s comprehensive services, including clinical treatment, child enrichment (e.g., visual and performing arts, music, sports and mentoring), early childhood education, and family support. Many of these programs and resources will be available to the community at large.

The new campus was designed by Koning Eizenberg Architecture, a leader in sustainable practices and recipient of the American Institute of Architects, California Council 2009 Firm Award. CII’s new campus will be one of the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified facilities constructed by a children’s service organization in Los Angeles.
