Statement on Charlottesville

Dear CII Supporters,

I was saddened and dismayed by the recent tragic events that took place in Charlottesville over the weekend. The senseless violence was a sobering reminder that national conversations around race, diversity and inclusion are as important and relevant as ever. The most recent developments compel me to state clearly CII’s position on this issue. This statement transcends electoral politics or party affiliation, and reflects our fundamental values and moral obligation.

CII serves some of the most vulnerable communities in Los Angeles, and our extraordinarily dedicated staff—many of whom grew up in the communities we serve—partners daily with children and families exposed to trauma in their homes and/or neighborhoods. Often these families are involved in the child welfare, mental health and juvenile justice systems because they face continued racism and other societal barriers to leading safe and fulfilling lives.

Anything less than total and absolute condemnation of white supremacists and their ideology is profoundly at odds with the values of CII. On behalf of our staff and the children and families we serve, I want to express my moral outrage at the racist and anti-Semitic beliefs of white supremacists and neo-Nazis.

We will continue to fight for the rights of our clients to lead lives free of hatred, bigotry, injustice and terrorism, and to support their culture, ethnicity, race, language, sexual orientation/gender, and religion. This is our mission, and our entire executive team will do everything we can to continue to support and defend the people we serve.

Sincerely,

Martine Singer
