Impact on Kids

October 31, 2011

The second in a three-part series, *_Building Community, Breaking the Cycle of Violence*_, this program dives deeper into the impact of domestic violence on children, and how early learned violence in the home connects to gang violence on the street.

Who should attend: Mental health providers, social workers, administrators from public and private agencies, law enforcement, and policymakers.

Keynote Speaker: Alyce LaViolette, MS, MFCC, will address the continuum of violence, from a victim/witness in early childhood to becoming a batterer. Ms. LaViolette has worked with battered women since 1978, first as an advocate at Women’s Shelter in Long Beach, and then in private practice. In 1979, she founded Alternative to Violence in Long Beach, one of the first programs in the country for spouse abusers. She specializes in anger management, domestic violence counseling for survivors and perpetrators, and gender issues.

Other presenters include:

Tim Dennison, a former gang member, whose own experience of fatherhood has changed his perspective on violence; and

Dawn L. Brown of Girls & Gangs, who will discuss how to communicate with gang interventionists to help in domestic violence situations.

Workshops will also include the Project Fatherhood model and Domestic Violence Group Treatment Model for Adult Victims and Their Children, both established by Children’s Institute, Inc.
