Community Violence and Field Safety

This dynamic workshop was presented by CII’s Leadership Center and is a program of the S. Mark Taper Foundation Child Trauma Training Academy.

Participants learned:

  • The basic components of domestic and community violence
  • The facts and myths about gangs and gang violence
  • How gangs and domestic and community violence intersect
  • The experience of women in gangs with domestic violence – victims and perpetrators
  • An overview of psychiatry diagnosis and treatment
  • Best practices of mental health and child welfare professionals
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity
  • Field safety: the emotional side, risk assessment and techniques for staying safe

About the presenters:
Dr. Jorja Leap, Adjunct Professor of Social Welfare, UCLA School of Public Affairs, is a recognized expert on crisis intervention and trauma response. Her current research focuses on gangs, youth and work designed to reduce risks and increase pro-social, healthy neighborhoods. She is the author of No One Knows Their Names and the forthcoming Home Front: Living with the Gangs of Los Angeles (Beacon Press).

Agustin Lizama, Program Coordinator for Homeboy Industries works in the Domestic Violence and Anger Management programs. A former gang member, Mr. Lizama now helps to train others working in gang intervention programs throughout California and beyond.
