The critical role that fathers play in their children’s health and well-being was the topic of the 4th Annual Fatherhood Solution Conference, hosted by Children’s Institute at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in Los Angeles. Nationally recognized experts addressed fatherhood from a wide range of perspectives including child psychology, education, and criminal and juvenile justice.
The event included a public tribute to the work and legacy of Dr. Hershel K. Swinger, a longtime member of CII’s executive management and founder of the agency’s Project Fatherhood, a program to help high-risk urban fathers become more effective, engaged parents. Dr Swinger passed away on May 23, 2011. His efforts resulted in a major expansion of Project Fatherhood – through funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – to 50 organizations located in various parts of Los Angeles County. The conference recognized fathers from ten of these organizations for their extraordinary commitment to fatherhood. The group represented communities in west, central and south Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Long Beach, Whittier and Palmdale.
