A Very Special 11th Birthday Party

February 13, 2010

CII founder Minnie Barton would have been beaming with pride to know that her great, great twin grandsons celebrated their 11th birthday by hosting a party for children at the agency’s Torrance campus. Barton dedicated her life to helping vulnerable children and families in turn-of-the-century Los Angeles. The boys’ mom, Kathy Duckworth, explains how the party came about. “Minnie began a family tradition that we continue today. When a child turns 10 or so, the idea is to “give back” rather than receive. Our boys missed doing that on their 10th, and after getting back in touch with CII this year, it made sense to all of us to do something for the children here,” she says. The party was a dream come true for a group of 50 pre-teens ranging in age from 8 to 12 years old. Highlights included a state-of-the-art video game truck where kids rocked out to the ever-popular Guitar Hero, and enjoyed remote-controlled car racing, a gift raffle; and two giant birthday cakes that the twins shared with all. A heartfelt thank-you to Daniel and Steven, their parents Kathy and Steve, and their aunt Sue Graham and husband Rick!
