Beyond Kale and Pedicures: What Works to Manage Compassion Fatigue and Secondary Trauma?

September 22, 2016

We now have over 20 years of research on Secondary Traumatic Stress and Compassion Fatigue. This presentation will review what’s new and what works to reduce the cost of caring.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review of most recent research in the field.
  • Three key tools for your practice.
  • New Directions for future research.

2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the publication of Charles Figley’s pioneering book Compassion Fatigue. Where are we at now? In order to reduce compassion fatigue and secondary trauma, we need to adopt a multi-pronged approach. Helpers, on their own, cannot be expected to fix an entire system. They do however remain responsible for their own well-being—it is an ethical responsibility, for themselves, their clients and the community in which they live. This presentation will offer three key tools for best practice, based on recent research.

Featured Presenter:
Françoise Mathieu, M. Ed. CCC is a Registered Psychotherapist in the province of Ontario and a compassion fatigue specialist. Her experience stems from 20 years as a crisis counsellor, working in hospital, university counselling service and community mental health environments. Françoise is co-executive director of TEND, whose aim is to offer counselling, consulting and training to helpers on topics related to self care, wellness, burnout and compassion fatigue. Since 2001, Françoise has given hundreds of seminars on compassion fatigue and self care across North America to thousands of helping professionals in the fields of health care, mental health, addiction, child welfare and the criminal justice system.
