TRAUMA-FOCUSED COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY SUPERVISOR - Training Cohort

July 30, 2015

About the Event
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TFCBT) is a powerful and effective evidence-based treatment for traumatized children and their families. Vicarious traumatization can be a health hazard of working with traumatized children and their families. Supervisees utilizing TF-CBT need added support around this issue as well as good supervision to ensure that they are maintaining fidelity to the model. Common challenges that arise with clinicians utilizing the model include letting COWS (crises of the week) get in the way of moving through the components in a timely manner and overcoming resistance in avoidant clients. This training will help supervisors be prepared to recognize and address these and other challenges as they arise. This training meets the DMH PEI requirements for TFCBT Supervisor Training.

Participants Will:

  • Ensure supervisees are selecting appropriate cases for the model and utilizing effective engagement strategies
  • Identify and challenge common mistakes new clinicians using the model make by not including enough gradual exposure and/or over attending to COWS
  • Recognize the importance of cross-cultural and developmentally appropriate applications of the model
  • Learn effective ways to implement the cognitive component with children who are particularly young or have comprehension difficulties
  • Identify ways to get supervisees unstuck in cases where there is avoidance/resistance moving through the trauma narrative phase
